We love living in Chicago in a city that is deep in traditions, huge in spirit, and strong in community! Chicago does St. Patrick's Day in an epic way! We've actually been celebrating since last week with the Northwest Side Irish Parade! Irish flags fill the neighborhood and leprechauns keep coming home from school. Our twins, along with all the kids at St. Thecla, were decked out in green today. We hit Vaughan's Pub for fish and chips tonight and St. Patrick's Day celebrations were in full swing.
Tomorrow morning one of Chicago's best traditions kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with the dyeing of the Chicago river green. This awesome tradition started in 1962 and is entrusted to the Chicago Plumbers Union Local 130. Over the years the crowds have continued to flourish and the Chicago Riverwalk has developed into a spectacular space. Thus, this year the dyeing of the Chicago river green is growing as well and will add one block! Enthusiastic St. Patrick's Day fans will be able to watch the Chicago river turn green from Columbus to State Street.
My husband, Tony and I watched the dyeing of the river green a few years ago and it was awesome! We loved watching the Chicago Plumbers Union zip around in their boats and turn the river green with their secret dye. Bagpipes played while huge crowds decked out in St. Patrick's Day finery cheered on the plumbers. It was such a gorgeous, iconic Chicago day.
After the dyeing of the river green, Tony and I had an opportunity to meet up with our friends at COUNTRY Financial and had a fantastic time celebrating St. Patrick's Day together.
