We seriously love the Jewel-Osco Monopoly game and I have three reasons why!
1. Family & Friends!
Stella and Sophia, my five-year-old twins, and I love the Jewel-Osco Monopoly game! The girls love asking for the Monopoly tickets when we are checking out and love playing the game when we get home. But, what we really love is calling their grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and family friends to discuss the Monopoly game. Sophia and Stella demanded that we call my parents, Nana and Papa, and Tony's parents, Grandma Loie and Grandpa Tom. In very excited voices, they asked if they were playing Monopoly this year. Grandpa Tom played last year and we loved calling him to check on his Monopoly board. Since all the grandparents were not playing this year, the girls asked if they could have their Monopoly tickets. Grandma Loie has been sending the girls Monopoly tickets in the mail and the girls have been thrilled to first receive mail with the Monopoly tickets and then to play the game. Grandma Loie even asked one of her friends to save the Monopoly tickets for the girls. Nana has envelopes for Sophia, Stella and their cousin Eleanora and the girls can't wait for each delivery. So awesome.
We recently had lunch with Uncle Matt and Aunt Holly, my brother and sister-in-law and my niece Eleanora. Eleanora told us in great detail how the day before she and her parents created an excellent shopping list to receive the maximum amount of Monopoly tickets. Uncle Matt went grocery shopping but somehow in all the commotion of check out did not take his Monopoly tickets. It was so funny hearing Eleanora explain the tragedy of losing the tickets. I promised to drop in the mail our stack of duplicate Monopoly tickets to her. Eleanora went on to explain her tale of woe to Nana and I asked Nana to slip Sophia and Stella's envelopes full of Monopoly tickets to Eleanora. Eleanora was so excited. So much fun. Uncle Matt went on to encourage us to enter the Monopoly codes on the website to win more prizes which we had not done! We need to check out the website!
Yesterday afternoon, we received a phone call from Uncle Mike and he wanted to talk about the Jewel-Osco Monopoly game. Grandpa Tom and Grandma Loie were over at his house and had told him about how the girls and I were playing. He wanted to check to see if we had some of his missing pieces. The girls didn't really understand what Uncle Mike was asking and starting yelling, "No!" I tried to explain that we were not giving away all of our Monopoly tickets. Stella started snatching up our tickets. Uncle Mike started reading off the list of letters and numbers of his missing tickets and I quickly jotted them down. My sweet Sophia brought be another piece of paper because she wanted to help out Uncle Mike. Later that evening I carefully went through our Monopoly tickets and looked to see if we had any matches for Uncle Mike. None yet but hopefully in the next batch.
Last year, my dear friend Kimmie was playing. Actually, her daughter Jessi was playing and Kimmie was just in charge of getting the Monopoly tickets while grocery shopping. We would check in with Jessi to see what she was missing and would swap Ziplock bags of duplicates. We were so excited when Jessi won a gift card.
Simple fun but we love it. While the game is a bit of a silly reason to be calling our family and friends, I just love it. We all seem so busy these days and the Jewel-Osco Monopoly game is causing us to pause and reach out. And, we love hearing the status of how everyone else is doing with their game boards. We hope everybody wins!

Last year Stella and Sophia loved tearing apart the Monopoly tickets and I think destroyed more pieces than we saved but it was so fun. This year they are masters at tearing off the sides of the Monopoly tickets and opening them up. This activity had been a great fine motor skill development game for the girls. Sophia and Stella also love checking out the pictures on the back of the tickets and will yell out, "Mom! Pirate's Booty!" or "Mommy! Ranch!" which are favorites in our house. They will scream, "Mommy, we found your Diet Coke!" and "Daddy is going to be so happy! Oreo's!" The girls think that when they find the picture we win that item and I just can't break it to them that we are not winning bags and bags of Goldfish and other treats. As we're opening the Monopoly tickets I'll ask the girls to find a match so they will search for matching Ranch tickets or matching Pirate's Booty and they love it. To up our skills, once we have the Monopoly tickets open, I'll ask the girls to search for certain letters and numbers for the Monopoly board. I'm amazed at how long they will focus on this task. There is a lot to learn and many skills to develop when you are in pre-school 4 and the Jewel-Osco Monopoly game is helping us learn and grow!

I must admit that with the intense political environment the world seems to sometimes be a little meaner these days. And, in the check-out lines in Chicago some of us - myself included - are a little grumpier these days with the 7 cent bag sales tax. I consider it an accomplishment to capture at least half my shopping list plus the many unplanned for items picked up by the twins. It is always a slow go with them and when we finally arrive at the check out line I realize my recyclable bags are in the car. So, yes I'm a bit beaten down at check out. But, during the Jewel-Osco Monopoly season I often receive a jolt of happiness. Often I will hear the friendly clerk ask someone ahead of me if they are playing Monopoly and they will say yes. Then, that stranger will turn around and hand the Monopoly tickets to the person behind them which brings smiles. I love this moment when strangers do something nice for each other and those playing could win big with the extra Monopoly tickets. A nice, simple moment in the check out lane. I love it.
I love the Jewel-Osco Monopoly game for the fun opportunities to chatter with my family and friends, for the great skills development play for Sophia and Stella, and how the game brings strangers together. Such fun. I hope you all win big. Jewel-Osco and the parent company, Albertson's deserve a great shout out for bringing some fun and joy to people across the country. A big shout out to all the companies that are participating in the game too. Great community outreach!
