If you envision your little ones tearing into Christmas presents and shrieking in delight, then Doc McStuffins is the gift that will make that magic happen! Let me tell you why!
1. Time for Your Checkup. Doc McStuffins does an amazing job caring for her toys and helping other hurt toys in need. Good lessons for watchful, little eyes. In a clever way, Disney Junior has done an excellent job of teaching young children what to do and what to expect if they are hurt, how to take care of themselves in a healthy way, and how to have compassion for others. We are huge Doc McStuffins fans and I have loved watching my four-year-old twins, Sophia and Stella conduct check-ups on their toys and willing family members. They are learning while they play and the sweet kindness woven into the show storylines is vibrant in their playing.
2. Dream big, princess. I love this Disney tag line and the empowering commercials with the Dream big, princess theme. Doc McStuffins is dreaming big of being a doctor like her mom. For the past year, my Stella has told anyone who asks that she is going to be a doctor like Doc McStuffins. Stella is dreaming big and Doc McStuffins is encouraging countless other children around the world to envision themselves as doctors. That is medicine that will make the world better.
3. Diversity in toys is good for kids. Four years ago, when Disney Junior created Doc McStuffins I believe they were probably trying to create a new character that could help children learn to be compassionate, how to take care of themselves and others, and about health and wellness. Excellent goals that they have far exceeded. But the show, Doc McStuffins, is so much more. The importance of diveristy and happy, successful families can also be learned at home and Disney plays a big societal role in that too. With Stella and Sophia, I have watched every episode of Doc McStuffins many, many times. It is powerful to see a happy, successful Doc McStuffins family. Doc’s mom is a doctor and her dad is, I think a chef. Doc's grandmother is a doctor too. The diversity of Doc and her friends and her toys is notable and sends good messages to kids. This acceptance and celebration of others spills over in to real life. I see it in many places, like in how my kids play with their toys, when we are at the park with others, and at school. And, Disney recognizes that they are fostering bigger, positive conversations in our world which is much needed.
4. Celebrate your uniqueness. There seems to be a lot of anger in the world right now. When you watch the news it seems that some people are more focused on tearing each other apart for our differences than building each other up. In a short time the Doc McStuffins show has done a great job helping children understand how to celebrate the uniqueness in ourselves and be compassionate towards other regardless of differences. I’m a bit in awe of how Chris Nee, the creator and executive producer of Doc McStuffins has woven some timely issues into the McStuffins family. The talented Molly Shannon played a cheetah who didn’t like her spots because she was different. Dress Up Daisy had a hard time understanding that boys could be nurses, not just girls. Awesome guy learned that you can still be awesome in a wheelchair. Kids need to see compassion, kindness, and empathy in a very direct way at a young age and Doc McStuffins is teaching core values that some grownups could use too.
5. Doc McStuffins/ Laya DeLeon Hayes is awesome. When I'm looking at toys for Sophia and Stella and our family and friends I often think about what the toy represents and would I want our childen to emulate similar values and character. I'm all in with Doc McStuffins and Laya DeLeon Hayes. As you can tell from above, I think the Doc McStuffins character is compassionate, smart, and a leader. This summer I started following Laya on Twitter while planning a trip to Indy to visit the Doc McStuffins temporary exhibit at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. After following Laya for several months, I can tell you that she emulates the dazzling values and character of Doc McStuffins in real life. Laya has such a bright, positive attitude, is kind towards others and is a teamplayer. You can tell she is dreaming big, is hopeful about our world, and is very hard working. Qualities I hope shine from Stella and Sophia as they grown older.
The whole Doc McStuffins cast and crew and special guests are amazing! As you wrap up your Christmas shopping over the next few days I hope you will place a Doc McStuffins toy or book under the tree for your littles ones to unwrap. I promise it will be magical!
